WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO WORK ON NSW RAIL NETWORKS (RISI COURSE)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO WORK ON NSW RAIL NETWORKS (RISI COURSE)

WHY DO I NEED THE TFNSW SX52 COURSE (RISI)?

If you want to work in the NSW rail industry the first step is completing the TfNSW SX52 Accessing the rail corridor course. Formally known as RISI – Rail Industry Safety Induction, this is an induction training package specifically designed for persons working in the Sydney metropolitan area and is recognised by all Network Owners in NSW, including:

This training introduces participants to the key generic hazards of and tasks associated operating in a rail environment, such as:

  • Danger Zones,
  • Rail corridor,
  • Safe Places,
  • Identification of some signals and their uses,
  • Types of rail lines in use and their names,
  • Basic emergency procedures,
  • Communication devices, line of sight and risks of working in a noisy environment,
  • Identify, explain and specify risks and hazards installed and associated with electrical equipment and infrastructure.

It provides skills and knowledge required by all staff and contractors working in the rail corridor under supervision and is suitable for individuals who are new to rail or those returning after a period away from the industry.

All of these rail networks require you to hold a Rail Industry Worker (RIW) card. This is an online program that gives participating organisations full visibility to a single electronic record of a workers competencies, health and education records as they move between employers or rail projects. Your primary employer must be in the RIW system and must order your RIW card (both physical and virtual).

To find out the requirements for each employment role within a rail network, you can visit the RIW website and find the matrix which describes the National Units of Competency you must hold to move into different employment roles.

WHAT IS THE OUTCOME?

This course provides the foundational unit of competency, TLIF2080 – Safely access the rail corridor (RISI), in accordance with the training materials licensed by Transport for New South Wales.

Please note:

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE CERT?

CERT Training is a Network Operator Approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO) on the Rail Industry Worker (RIW) website and is recognised by all of the networks mentioned above. Nationally, CERT employs in excess of thirty-five trainers and assessors with either safety or rail background, and in most cases both. All CERT trainers have a minimum of ten year’s rail experience (most have in excess of twenty years) and two years of training experience. Trainers have recent and ongoing experience in the delivery of rail infrastructure, rail operations and/or rail safe working training and assessment.

WHAT RAIL INDUSTRY ROLES DOES THIS RELATE TOO?

If high-risk work tickets, certifications, or licences are also held, completion of this course, a category 3 medical, and a Construction Industry ‘White Card’ (CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry) will allow the learner to work across a number of trade (plumber, carpenter, formworker, etc.) and plant operation roles in the rail corridor.
Job roles working directly or indirectly in the rail corridor are often referred to as “Around the Track Personnel” and may relate to:

  • designing, construction, certifying, maintaining, repairing or monitoring the rail corridor and its infrastructure,
  • signaling and signaling operations,
  • rolling stock and rail infrastructure,
  • driving/shunting through or to and from the rail corridor,
  • the development and management of Safe working systems – for example
  • cleaners, landscapers, electricians, plumbers, painters, security officers.

WHERE CAN I DO THIS COURSE?

The duration of this course is 7 hours and can be completed at NSW CERT Training Centres, in

If a company has several staff that requires TLIF2080 – Safely access the rail corridor, training may be offered at your premises anywhere in NSW, providing it meets network criteria.
CERT also has authorised trainers that can provide this specific course Australia wide.

There are no pre-requisites for the TfNSW SX52 Accessing the rail corridor course (RISI) and a medical is not required to sit the course, but a minimum of a Category 3 Rail Medical must be completed before going on-track and gaining access to the rail corridor. CERT offers this service through the accredited provider, Company Medical Services and you can complete the medical at our office locations at 7.30am, before commencing training. Refer to the fact sheet for more information.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The training for this course has two components.

  1. Classroom based learning which is assesses through a theory component comprised of multiple choice and short answer questions,
  2. Practical learning conducted in a rail-based environment through which the tasks associated with working in the rail corridor are learned and then assessed, using a Performance Assessment where the knowledge gained throughout the training are assessed.

Prior to the commencement of training, all students are required to complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LL&N) assessment. This assessment process ensures students have the best opportunity to complete training and undergo assessment, as well as apply the areas of competence successfully in the workplace. All CERT Trainers are skilled and experienced in dealing with students that may have language, literacy and numeracy issues and are qualified to tailor training and assessment strategies to the needs of the student.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Upon successful completion of this course, learners are eligible to enrol in:

  • TLI21315 Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure – Core Units
    • These core units are required by all personnel and network operators prior to moving into roles such as rail labourer.
  • ARTC Protection Officer, Level 1
    • Please see below a summary of workplace activities that can be completed as a PO1:
